H. May (they / them)

Eternally transforming scholar, artivist, educator, director, writer, filmmaker…

and true believer in the power of theatre to transform lives

I’m a Professor of Theatre at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, the Founder and Artistic Director of Mosaic NY, an Actors' Equity Association stage manager, and a Full Member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society. As both a scholar and a practitioner of theatre, my work uses theatre and performance as a means of asking questions, stoking curiosity, and exploring ways to imagine and build new spaces, processes, institutions and worlds that are just, equitable, accessible, inclusive, and creative.

I regularly teach a variety of courses at HWS, melding my work as a practitioner and scholar in the classroom, office, and on stage: Acting I, Directing, Stage Management, Theatre for Social Change, From Page to Stage: Script Analysis, and the Senior Theatre Capstone. I also direct as part of our rotation.

I believe growth happens through new collaborations, boundary pushing, and leaps of faith. I try to place myself massively out of my comfort zone at least once a year, often by attending professional workshops and sometimes by tackling new collaborations or creative projects. If you are interested in exploring the possibility of collaborating, please let me know!
