Playing the Other

Miscellaneous Collaborations

My Covid Sabbatical has drastically altered my plans for the types of creative explorations I could engage in. Needless to say, my plans for residencies to develop the tactile and audience interactive components of “Rearranging the Furniture” were quickly canceled. As a result, in addition to a little bit of scholarly writing I’m working on, I’ve been immersing myself in learning sound and film editing and recording. The projects that have grown out of this exploration are below.

WEE MAYHEM: My sister, S. Beth May, is a tremendously talented artist of many mediums, most especially as a musician and composer. While she created an original score for my productions of Why We Have a Body and Heavier Than…, distance and an overwhelmingly packed schedule have kept us from collaborating regularly. Until recently, that is, when we realized we could create these tiny collaborations. I have the easy task, recording short videos (mostly on my iPhone during morning runs), which I then pass off to Beth to create magical scores. We describe the ongoing project in the following way: 2020 and the ongoing pandemic moment has felt relentless, with seemingly constant shifts in perspective and information. At times it has been very hard to find our footing. These tiny videos developed as a way of finding a moment of peace, of taking a breath, of allowing the time to really see and hear the world around us in all its beauty and pain - if only fleetingly - before resuming reality.
